C.B. Sung
Founding Chairman
The late C.B. Sung, Chairman of Unison Group, with his wife, Beulah Kwok Sung as his business partner, launched 39 Sino-foreign joint ventures in China, including the 5-star Great Wall Hotel of Beijing, the largest of the very first three Sino-foreign joint ventures approved in China, and the Beijing Jeep Corporation, China’s first automotive joint venture.

A visionary,C. B. believed as early as the 1970s that China’s economic development depended on increased investment in the aviation, defense, automotive, energy, and telecom industries. One of his key investments, Shanghai Unison ElectroDynamics, Ltd. helped produce both nickel metal hydride batteries and specialized motors, transforming China’s use of electric bicycles, motorcycles and cars.
Previously, Mr. Sung spent 22 years at Bendix Corporation (1952 to 1974), where he ultimately headed its Advanced Technology Group. He was the first Asian American to have been elected a corporate officer in a Fortune 100 corporation. Under his direction, he helped develop new industries and products such as numerically controlled machine tools, automotive electronic fuel injection, computer graphics and image data processing systems.

Mr. Sung was a co-founder and the founding Chairman of The 1990 Institute, whose vast connections in China helped Institute partner with the influential All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF), enabling the Institute to launch projects addressing rural poverty, rural girls’ education and youth art & environmental projects.

Mr. Sung was a member of the U.S. National Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and the Committee of 100. Mr. Sung received a B.S. in Engineering from Chiao-Tung University in China, a S.M. in Engineering from MIT, and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
